VSA joins the Save Square
On Sunday, October 31st, the Animal Save Movement is organizing a vegan outreach event (called a save square) in Nijmegen. VSA Nijmegen is for the second time joining this event so that its members can get to know this form of activism.
The Save Square consist of two groups. One group stands around blindfolded (you can see through the blindfold) holding either a screen or a sign with text. The screens show (graphic) footage of the livestock industry. These activists stand in a clean formation to attract the attention of the public and with signs invite them to come closer. The other half of the group act as outreachers who have conversations with interested bystanders to have them reconsider their (food) choices regarding animals.
The participants regularly change roles, but if you don’t feel comfortable yet about doing outreach, you can just remain in the square. No rush! After the event, participants often go out together for a drink or a bite to eat, feel free to join them.
A more detailed briefing is held at the event and the organizers + president of VSA Nijmegen (responsible for animal ethics) will be present to help you with your first activist experience.
The footage shown at the event is graphic, but you don’t need to watch it, if you don’t want to. Especially if you only stand in the formation, you see (next to) nothing of it. Your VSA board members, the Animal Save Movement organizers, and your fellow activist are there for you, if you need any emotional support. After the event, VSA attendants will do a short reflection.
